The HID OMNIKEY 5422 is a dual-interface smart card reader that handles both contact ISO 7816 cards (PIV, CAC, PKI certificates) and contactless ISO 14443 cards (HID iCLASS, MIFARE) from a single USB device. This makes it the go-to reader for enterprise environments that issue PIV or PKCS#15 smart cards for Windows Logon, VPN authentication, and S/MIME email signing without carrying two separate readers.
